For the Love of Olive Oil
We carry over 20 olive oils, including oils infused with lemon, basil, truffle, rosemary and garlic. We suggest keeping three nice olive oils on hand in the kitchen. For dressings, dips and drizzling on bread, have a nice green oil which is cold pressed and extra virgin. Choose a lighter extra virgin for variety, and a milder, less expensive oil for frying, grilling and roasting.
Olive Oil of the Week
Frantoio Valtenesi Extra Virgin Olive Oil
This is Herma’s “work horse” olive oil. It comes from a selection of olives that are hand picked in Lombardy, Italy and pressed immediately to ensure taste and quality. It has a mild fruity taste that evokes wild herbs and artichokes, is well balanced, and perfect on vegetables, meats and soups. This oil is best on warm dishes where it can fully realize it’s fragrance. – News from the Cheese Shop
For more information on cheese, meats and olive oils, pick up September’s leaflet, News from the Cheese Shop, which may be found in our cheese department.
History of Olive Oil
Its ancient history, yet still just as wonderful today.
The ancient Greeks said that the goddess Athena had created the olive tree. King David ordered guards to protect Israel’s olive groves. Ancient people used olive oil not just for cooking and serving up meals, but also as perfume and soap, anointing the dead, and as an oil for lamps. In ancient Greece, athletes would rub it all over their bodies. Olive oil was also used to produce both medicine and makeup. Homer aptly called it liquid gold while Hippocrates called it the great healer.

Featured Cheeses
Monte Enebro
A rare Spanish goat’s milk cheese – creamy, lemony and acidic when young, intensifying as it ages. Made exclusively by Rafael & Paloma Baez in Avila, Spain.
Piave Vecchio (Red Label)
This Italian Cheese is aged a minimum of 12 months. Dense, slightly sweet and full-bodied – think Parmigiano with a hint of aged Gouda.
Come soon, as these exquisite cheeses are flying off our shelves!
Available meats…
We carry Prosciutto, Fennel and Porchetta which may be sliced exactly how you like along with many other specialty salamis that are ready for purchase straight from our shelves. Italy’s strict rules concerning production make these meats healthy with no nitrates, so eat up.
Great to pack for children’s back to school lunches and, of course, for entertaining.
Condiment of the Week
Denise suggests Gourmet Village Cranberry Orange Cheese Topping which is perfect for a baked brie. It is also nice with soft cheeses like goat and camembert.
We hope to see you soon. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
