After-Dinner Cheese Suggestions

Five Dessert Cheese Suggestions

For something special after dinner this Valentine’s Day enjoy a plate of lovely cheese thoughtfully paired with just the right drink. Dessert cheese is an ongoing trend common in Europe with growing popularity here in North America as well.

Brillat-Savarin

Brillat Savarin is a soft, white, cow’s-milk, triple crème cheese with velvety texture. Aged for 4 to 5 weeks, Brillat Savarin is decadent, exceptionally creamy, and an easy stand-in for dessert. Enjoy its flavours of salt and cream with hints of mushroom, nuts and truffles.

Brie de Meaux

Brie De Meaux is the most famous of all Bries and in our opinion the very best of all. This gorgeous, buttery and earthy cheese is steeped in French history and has on many occasions been the cheese of royalty dating back all the way to Charlemagne. Brie De Meaux is made of raw cow’s milk and is meaty. Produced just 30 miles east of Paris in the region of Ile-de-France.

Serve with Beaujolais or Champagne.

Morbier

Morbier was originally made by cheesemakers who lived in the village of Morez in the Jura Mountains of France  situated in a deep valley a few miles from the Swiss border. Though strongly aromatic, it has a surprisingly mild, fruity flavor with a nutty aftertaste, making it an ideal dessert cheese.  The pungent cheese goes well with fruit.

Serve with a light, fruity red such as Beaujolais, a Pinot Noir or Gewurztraminer.

Saint Agur

This French blue, produced in Auvergne in central France, is very creamy. Full of flavour enough to satisfy blue cheese lovers, yet mild enough to please those new to blues.

Saint Agur cheese plate suggestions…

Place Saint Agur on a plate with dark chocolate, 2 raspberries and 2 blackberries -or- place with 1/2 a cup of candied nuts, 4 slices of ginger and 4 strips of candied orange peel.  The sweetness offsets the saltiness for perfect balance.

Serve with aged Port or Sherry.

Brebirousse D’Argental

Brebirousse d’Argental is a soft sheep’s milk cheese, made in Lyon. Its intense creaminess and gooey texture give way to a burst of rich, deep meatiness unmistakably sheep. Offers a pretty combination of delicate sweet and intense buttery flavours.

Serve with a handful of apricots, a scoop of honey and a glass of sherry.
