Herma’s News – Auction for Sookey, NEW Stoles and Adventures in the Kitchen

Dogs, for a reason that can only be described as divine, have the ability to forgive, let go of the past and live each day joyously. It’s something the rest of us strive for. – Jennifer Skiff

Dear Customers,

Creating special meals in the kitchen this time of year can be made into an adventure with foods that delight all the senses. In this newsletter we wish to provide you with fun, cozy food ideas perfect for cold, winter months.

We are also excited to announce a new fundraiser taking place for the next couple of weeks. May the best dog-lover win!

Place your bid for Sookie!

All proceeds go to the Northumberland Humane Society.

This weekend will begin our auction for Sookie, a beautiful Huskey that looms over 3 feet tall and is valued at $900. Bidding will begin at $300 of which all proceeds from this auction will go to the Northumberland Humane Society. The auction will come to an end on National Doggie Date Night (yes, it is a holiday) on February 3rd. Good luck winning this lovable, not-so-little dog.

The Northumberland Humane Society has been a non-kill shelter for over 50 years. Their main goal is to care for animals that can’t help themselves. They perform animal cruelty investigations, provide temporary homes for pets looking for new homes, are involved in a spay and neuter program and raise money for the Pet Food Bank.

Snuggle up with our NEW Stoles

Adventures in the Kitchen

Homemade Pizza

Find all sorts of toppings for pizza at Herma’s (red peppers, artichokes, mushrooms, sundried tomatoes, etc.) along with pizza sauce and pizza flour. Try Taleggio – a soft gourmet alternative to mozzarella. Consider drizzling one of our cheese-pairing honeys or Truffle oils for a more complex flavour.

What’s more? We also carry all sorts of tools to make pizza-making better than ever before including Dreamfarm’s Scizzas (pictured), pizza cutters, far reaching pizza peels and ceramic pizza stones.

A wonderful treat! Now find Panettone at a special marked-down price.

To make your morning even more extra-special you might want to also consider purchasing Borgo de Medici’s Chocolate Biscotti and Italian Cappuccino Sets.

Spanish Paella

Bring the flavour of Spain into your kitchen with our paella kit. It is as simple as adding water to the included ingredients: dehydrated seafood broth, olive oil and Paella rice. We also suggest adding Tiger Shrimp (found in our freezers).

A nice addition to your night with Paella…

Quince Paste is a thick jam from Spain made from the fruit of the quince tree that keeps its form when sliced. This richly red to orange-colored jam has a sweet taste and a slightly floral flavor – an excellent pairing for cheese. Enjoy with thin slices of toasted baguette and some mild cheese. Don’t forget the wine!

Margaret’s Cozy Pasta Dish Suggestion…

Chestnut Pasta with Raclette Recipe

With this recipe you’ll find the saltiness of pancetta and the mild, melted creaminess of Raclette addictive when added to our yummy chestnut pasta.

NEW at Herma’s – Greek Kitchen

Find the Greek Kitchen’s Dolmades (stuffed vine leaves with rice and herbs), Flame Roasted Greek Red Peppers (ideal for salads and pasta dishes), Gigantes (giant baked beans in a tomato sauce) all imported from Greece.

Herma’s Cheese Shop

Paulus Abbey Beer Cheese from Holland

We are especially fond of this creamy gouda with beer from Holland. To us it is the quintessential beer cheese – really one of the best we’ve ever tried. Get it while it lasts, but if its gone, rest assured we will be ordering more.

Cozy, Winter Fun, Swiss-Style, with Raclette and Gruyere

To continue our idea of enjoying an adventure in the kitchen consider having fun with Raclette and Fondue.

Raclette 101

Modern day Raclette is enjoyed by placing slices of raclette onto small nonstick pans, called coupelles, which are most often placed underneath the broiler of a raclette machine. Meats and vegetables can be grilled on the griddle. When boiled potatoes and/or heated meat and veggies are placed on your plate, the oozing, hot, heavenly cheese is poured on top for something really special.

Fondue Recipe

Dip cubed pieces of baguette bread, small squares of juicy steak and/or potato wedges into an amazing mixture of melted Gruyere (3 cups, grated) and dry white wine (1.25 cups). You’ll also want to have 1 teaspoon of cornstarch, 1 clove of garlic, splash of lemon juice, maybe a little brandy and freshly ground pepper on hand while preparing your fondue.

Instructions

Rub pan with clove of garlic. Pour wine and lemon juice into the pan and turn on the heat. Add cheese, a handful at a time, while stirring. Add corn starch with maybe some brandy if desired. Once fondue comes to a boil it should be ready. Add pepper and start dipping your foods into the pot for an amazing treat of hot, oozing, melted fun.

We carry both fondue pots and raclette machines if you do not already have one at home.

Charcuterie

Have sliced by Janis, Margaret or Herma…Fennel Salami (on sale), Porchetta Ham, Prosciutto, Calabrese Salami and Pancetta (both Regular and Spicy). Also find some lovely packaged salamis both in our Cheese Shop and in our coolers around the corner.

We look forward to your visit as you prepare for your adventure in the kitchen.

Be safe and stay well.

Sincerely,

Meredith Ender
