As summer turns to Autumn we begin to think of holidays to come. For those preparing for Thanksgiving we have all sorts of foods to inspire. This includes placing orders for turkeys, capons and more.

And for those early Christmas shoppers, we are already well stocked with fun gift and stocking stuffer items along with an entire selection of Michel Design Works Christmas soaps, lotions and home fragrances.

Thanksgiving Food Orders

Thanksgiving is Monday, October 11th – just 2 1/2 weeks away. We are once again  excited to offer the Village Grocer’s amazing turkeys, capons, hams and more. Below is information that will help make your ordering easier.

Last day to order – Tuesday, October 5th

Earliest Pickup – Friday, October 8th

Turkey Size

As a general rule, a regular sized turkey will feed one person per pound of meat. For a small turkey this will be 1 1/2 pounds per person. When calculating size remember to include enough meat  for delicious turkey leftovers.

Turkeys $4.29 per pound

Turkeys, fresh free range, will be around 14-22 lb this Thanksgiving season!

small = 14+ pounds, medium = 18+ pounds, large = 20+ pounds

Capons

Perfect for those that are having a smaller gathering. Capons are neutered roosters. Compared to other chicken meat or turkey, capon meat is tastier and more flavorful. In addition to that, the meat is juicy without any gamey taste.

Capons $4.99 per pound

small = 7+ pounds, medium = 9 pounds, large = 10+ pounds

Herma’s Cheese Shop

At Herma’s we are proud to offer lovely cheese and meats along with endless condiments, crackers and crostini. For something special one does not have to slave in the kitchen. Below are delightful foods involving pears, goat cheese, prosciutto and more that are  delicious, delightful and easy to put together.

Pear, Goat Cheese and Walnut on Crostini

This is a delightful treat enjoyed by my family last night which may be served as either an appetizer or a dessert. The warmth of the walnuts and pears on Herma’s crispy homemade crostini makes for a really special treat.

1. Top pear slices with crumbled goat cheese and walnut pieces. Warm in oven.

2. Spread remaining goat cheese on Herma’s homemade crostini.

3. Remove pears from oven and place pear slices on goat cheese-smeared crostini.

4. Add a dab of warmed goat cheese and walnut on top of pear.

5. Drizzle with honey and balsamic. Add a crack of pepper.

For added complexity place a savory preserve or confit on top of crostini prior to placing pear on top. We especially like The Garlic Box’s Horseradish Garlic Jam with Pear Juice for this combination.

Prosciutto – Oh how I love thee…

This salty, cured delicacy enjoyed since Roman times is just as beloved and relevant today as it ever was. We love it on pizza, charcuterie boards, in salads and sandwiches. Best of all, its thin and delicate texture is perfect for gently wrapping around veggies, fruits and Italian bread sticks.

Below are two show-stopping recipes involving prosciutto.

Prosciutto Wrapped Pears

My husband and I were amazed by this fabulous combination. Prosciutto crisped around tender, juicy pear is a must for those that want to try something unique and special.

Broil prosciutto-wrapped pears in oven for 2-3 minutes until prosciutto starts to crisp and pear becomes tender. Turn over once and let sit in oven for another minute. Remove from oven. Add a drizzle of aged balsamic and a crack of pepper.

For a little extra complexity add a smidgen of crumbled blue cheese on top.

Prosciutto Wrapped Asparagus

1. Preheat oven to 350° F. Blanch appx 16 asparagus in boiling water for 1 minute, drain and pat dry.

2. Lightly brush asparagus with melted garlic butter mixture. Roll buttered asparagus in grated Parmigiana.

3. Wrap each asparagus tightly with 1/2 a slice of prosciutto.

4. Place prosciutto wrapped asparagus in oven on greased baking sheet for 5 minutes.
