Father’s Day is a time to celebrate not only our fathers, but the father of our children and the father(s) of our grandchildren. It is also a time to celebrate those father-figures who weren’t there at the beginning but who have gained that position by filling the void of a father not always present.

Emile Henry Storage Bowl

The upper level – made of cork serves as a fruit bowl. The lower level, made of ceramic acts as a mini pantry to store potatoes, onions, beets and other root vegetables, as well as fruit that is not ripe enough.

The natural properties of the cork help preserve the fruit and keeps it fresh longer. It also keeps pesky fruit flies at bay. The ceramic body keeps the light out, and together with the insulating properties of the cork lid and a well placed hole, they help maintain a constant temperature, much like in an old school cellar.

So many lovely cheeses fill our coolers that will be lovely on a cheese tray or enjoyed during a picnic. Anyway you serve it we hope you’ll think of Herma’s and all the beautiful condiments, salami, prosciutto, cheese boards and more that are found within Herma’s Cheese Shop. We are especially fond of the Saltspring Kitchen preserves and condiments seen above.

Parmigiano Reggiano DOP

While cheaper imitations exist, authentic Parmigiano Reggiano with DOP status is best. This means that the production is protected by the European Union and must be crafted by hand like it was made 1000 years ago in the region of Italy where it originated, including the province of Parma and Reggio. Only natural ingredients are used including milk, salt and rennet (an enzyme from a calf intestine). It also contains a high percentage of calcium content.

This cheese is a staple in Italian kitchens (and ours as well). We shave it over salads, grate over pasta dishes, use as a coating for chicken and cut into chunks as a snack. It is even a great addition to a tart crust to offset a strawberry filling and is lovely by itself with an aged balsamic. I have even heard of it being used as a garnish for a bloody mary.

Handmade in Aurora, ON, notes of Canadian maple syrup are highlighted in Fraktals’ spectacular buttercrunch core. Fraktals’ buttercrunch resides in between two layers of Belgian chocolate and sprinkled with cashews.

Also try their NEW Salted Caramels which are covered in chocolate and topped with coarse sea salt. Made in small batches, these sea salt caramels are handmade each step of the way, from the stirring of the caramel in copper pots to the hand-tying of each ribbon.
