All houses wherein men have lived and died are haunted houses. Through the open doors the harmless phantoms on their errands glide, with feet that make no sound upon the floors. – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
While we know Halloween has not yet passed, this time of year at Herma’s is one of the most special for us as we are overflowing with all sorts of Christmas ornaments, scented candles and chocolates. We know the idea of Christmas seems a little early for some, but when you got it you’ve got to flaunt it, and oh do we have it.

Hot Chocolate Bombs
This NEW way to serve hot chocolate is all the rage. Place ball of chocolate in a mug. Pour boiling water into mug and wait for the bomb to melt exposing miniature marshmallows. So much fun and oh so delicious.
Herma’s Cheese Shop
Let your night with friends last longer by serving small plates of foods one at a time, along with lots of wine chosen perfectly to compliment each serving. We have some delicious recommendations that hail from a region of Europe we adore.
We recommend one NEW particularly charming cheese from Corsica and a couple of amazing cheeses from Spain. In addition we also offer other foods from Spain perfect for a night of Tapas – hence our title Spanish Nights.
Saveur du Maquis
Saveur du Maquis cheese is a raw sheep’s milk cheese from the island of Corsica. It has a natural rind that is covered with rosemary, thyme, juniper berries and other aromatic herbs found in the rocky Corsican landscape. Saveur du Maquis is creamy with a fresh, slightly herbaceous and nutty flavor. Choose a local white wine from the Corsican region or Riesling to pair with this cheese.
Queso Zamorano DOP
Zamorano DOP (PDO) is a Spanish raw sheep’s milk cheese made in the region of Castile-Leon, Zamora. It has a pale-yellow colour with crumbly texture. Its flavour comes from milk created by a specific breed of small Churra and Castilian sheep. It has a full piquant flavor with a delicate, tart aftertaste. Pair with white wine or Zinfandel.
Queixo San Simon Da Costa DOP
This is a semi-cured, cow’s milk cheese with a mild, milky flavor and pleasant taste of nuts and butter. Its aftertaste and aroma of smoky birch is due to it being smoked with birch wood at the end of its maturation. Try pairing with white wines and aged reds, even a light beer.
NEW at Herma’s! Organic Quince Paste
We are excited to carry this paste which is the perfect accompaniment with mild Spanish cheeses. Place a triangle of this paste on a plate of cheese for an extra-special tasting experience. Quince is one of the oldest fruits grown primarily near the Mediterranean. It is similar to apples and pairs with a subtle floral note.
May be enjoyed in thin slices, right out of the package with crusty bread. Also use it to enhance soups, stews or rice dishes such as paella. Delicious! We especially love Spanish chorizo fried with Sherry Vinegar. The flavor of this sausage is brightened by the vinegar. Fry it up and serve with crusty bread.

This week in Herma’s Studio will hang one of my paintings. It is an honor for me to have Herma make room for one of my pieces and I’m excited for you to see it. To view more of my work go to artbyme.ca.
