We so enjoyed Saturday’s 27th annual Open House which gave us an opportunity to say thanks to all those that choose to shop with us. If you attended, we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did. If you weren’t able to attend, don’t fret. A visit to Herma’s will certainly get you in the holiday spirit any day of the week with all the beautiful magic this season has to offer.

A Room full of Chocolates
We have received two waves of European chocolates – or shall we say tidal waves. I am always amazed at how Herma’s turns into a confectionary store during the holidays. A third big wave of chocolates is expected to arrive in the days and weeks to come so stay tuned.
Panettone for the Holidays
It’s official! The Christmas season has begun. I know this because Panettone and Stollen have arrived at Herma’s. At the Open House we sampled the cherry and also the pear and chocolate Panettone along with some Stollen which were all really delicious.
One showstopper is Attilio Servi 2 KG Magnum Panettone which is housed in a large crate. Imagine what an amazing centerpiece this large Panettone will make at your Christmas party. More arrivals of Panettone are expected in coming days and weeks so stay tuned.
What is Panettone?
Panettone, or “big bread”, is a holiday tradition in Italy, where it is often given as a gift and brought to share. This sweet, light, airy bread is enjoyed at teatime, as a dessert, and even for breakfast (which is the case for Herma). Beautifully packaged, they make the perfect hostess and Christmas gift.

What is chutney?
Chutney is a savoury condiment made from slow-cooked fruits or vegetables, vinegar, and spices. Originating from India, chutneys have travelled the globe, collecting a twist in every country to suit local tastes. Historically, it was an ideal way of preserving the autumn harvest surpluses. Although chutney is known for being served on the side as a condiment, it’s also a great way to add spice in recipes. FYI…Jam is sweeter and does not generally contain vinegar.

People often shop at Herma’s for adult stocking stuffers where they purchase their favourite jams and cooking utensils. Dreamfarm’s cooking utensils are often a favourite choice for stocking stuffers as anyone that has used them knows just how special and innovative they are.
Herma’s Cheese Shop
Janis, Janet and Cora Lee were very busy all day this past Saturday during our Open House slicing and serving Italian cheese and meats. Amongst those amazing cheeses were some of our favourite Beppino Occelli cheeses, Taleggio, Gorgonzola and many others. Janis is excited for more holiday cheeses to arrive in coming days. We so love this time of the year. Festive feasting and grazing at its best!

Thanks to Zak, Denis and other good friends for joining our Open House!
We are so thankful to have had a number of good friends join us on Saturday including Zak of Prep Food Co., Denise of The Porridge Mom, Geri, Ford, Sandra, Cora Lee, Janet, Monique and Madison. It was such a pleasure to have them spend their day with us. Margaret, Janis and I along with Herma’s family also worked hard to make this Open House special, including two of Herma’s granddaughters who moved about the store all day offering food from silver trays along with handing out surprise gifts.
Kudos to Zak and Denise
Zak of Prep Food Co. (www.prepfoodco.com) shared with our customers tray upon tray of amazing hors d’eouvres that he and his staff offer for catering. They also provide Meal Kits and healthy, delicious food at their lunch counter. Look for us to work with Zak the week prior to Christmas. Stay tuned!
Denise from the Porridge Mom demonstrated the use of her wooden spurtle whose unique shape allows for lump-free and evenly mixed porridge, batter, soups, and more, greatly improving texture. The Porridge and blueberries she offered was delightful. Denis’ spurtle may be found at Herma’s and would make a lovely stocking stuffer or hostess gift.
