Herma’s News – Adding Flavour to Summertime Foods
When they ask me what I’ve done with my life, I hope that I can say I was far too punch-drunk with love living in the moments to accurately recall all of its greatness. – P.T. Berkey
Dear Customers,
The beauty of summer calls for us to leave behind our worries and concerns and live in the moment. At Herma’s we look forward to being of use to you as you prepare to dine on the patio, pack a picnic or graze on foods by the lake. Special Flavours for Summertime Foods
At Herma’s we have an amazing selection of pantry goods many of which will enhance and elevate the flavour of your food. Below are just a few examples.
Aioli actually first began in Southern France as garlic was pounded with mortar and pestle, then emulsified with olive oil. Egg yolks and lemon juice were also sometimes added. Today it is considered to be a posh mayonnaise that has been combined with different flavours perfect for dipping, drizzling, spreading and using as an ingredient in recipes. Think French fries, mozzarella sticks, onion rings, shrimp, crab cakes, sandwiches, wraps, pita bread sandwiches, hamburgers, tacos, deviled eggs and potato salad.
Stonewall Kitchen offers an amazing array of aioli to suit every taste including Habanero Mango Aioli, Siracha Aioli, Lemon Herb Aioli, Horseradish Aioli, Ghost Pepper Aioli, Chipotle Aioli, Truffle Aioli, Roasted Garlic Aioli, Maple Bacon Aioli and more.
*Find Fries cooked in Duck Fat in our freezers ready to get crispy in your oven.
Smak Dab Gourmet Mustard
A simple spoon of mustard makes all the difference in the flavour and overall composition of a dish, especially when you use Smak Dab’s high quality gourmet mustards.
Smak Dab Mustards at Herma’s
Beer Chipotle Mustard (Contains Manitoba Brewed Amber Ale. Add to homemade cheese sauces, BBQ sauces for ribs, meatloaf or roast beef sandwich.)
Hot Honey Jalapeno Mustard (Very tasty with grilled burgers, hot dogs, crispy chicken wings and mayo-based dressings.)
Curry Dijon Mustard (Contains Manitoba honey and aromatic Madras Curry powder. Try with glazed ham, roasted root veggies, grilled chicken, juicy bratwurst, sauces and dressings.)
Cranberry Wine Mustard (Grandma’s old school cranberry jelly meets mulled wine in this mustard which is great with baked brie, roasted turkey, grilled cheese and ham.)
Canadian Maple Mustard (Contains 100% pure Quebec maple syrup and prairie grown mustard seeds. Try with pork roast, on a cheese and charcuterie board, with sweet potatoes and glazed salmon.)
Honey Horseradish Mustard (It is best suited for roasted brussels sprouts, pulled pork, grilled ham and cheese sandwiches, devilled eggs and as a glaze for salmon and chicken.)
il Frantoio – Herma’s Work Horse
Il Frantoio is what Herma uses and always has on hand in the kitchen. Bold with buttery texture and peppery finish, this Tuscan oil comes from hand-picked olives that were immediately pressed. Find on Herma’s wall of oils and balsamic.
Herma’s Cheese Shop
Find an amazing selection of beautiful cheeses and charcuterie in our coolers. We have many old favourites and some cheeses that are new – freshly sliced, carefully wrapped and lovingly placed on our shelves. Janis will be in our Cheese Shop this weekend to offer information and aid you with your choices.
The cheese section of our store that we fondly call our Cheese Shop has so much to offer where cheese is concerned including the knives, cheese paper, boards, condiments, crackers, charcuterie and, of course, the cheese. We look forward to being of use to you for your long-weekend preparations.
Pairing Fruit Spreads with Cheese
We suggest…
Origen from Spain
Origen’s Red Wine Jam is made with 60% of DOP Jumilla Spanish Wine, the perfect pairing for cheese and pork.
Origen also offers Wildberry Jam which is made with blackberries, blueberries and raspberries – lovely spread on a cracker or piece of toast.
And their fig jam offers the subtlety of sweet notes with every bite featuring figs from Murcia in Spain.
Provisions from Niagra
Peach Prosecco is inspired by the Bellini cocktail which combines sweet peaches with the fun fiz of Prosecco. Serve with creamy cheese.
The sour cherries and Merlot wine make Cherry Merlot a very special treat on your cheese and charcuterie platter. Pair with hard, aged cheese.
Pears are picked at their peak and then poached in Riesling. Aromatic and luscious, pair Pear Riesling with creamy cheeses and ripened blues.
Snowdonia from UK
Janis’ favourite chutney for cheese is Snowdonia’s Spiced Tomato & Vodka Chutney from the UK. It combines sundried tomatos from Italy with premium French vodka. Delicious with cheese and salami.
