We are buzzing with ideas that will make shopping at Herma’s even more interesting and fun, including the introduction of new products and an event that we hope will be the start of many.

Herma’s Kitchen Party

You and your friends now have the opportunity to join Herma and Taco for an afternoon of learning and fun. Be personally guided by Taco through the store as he demonstrates how to use kitchen gadgets and tools that will make food prep easier and more precise. At the end of your tour join Herma in the Studio for a complimentary luncheon.

When? Choose from three Wednesdays (June 15th, 22nd & 29th). – How many guests? Bring 6-7 Friends. – Cost? Free – Perks? Hostess receives a small gift and all guests receive a 15% discount on non-food items.

The Queen’s Jubilee begins this week.

Want to commemorate the Queen’s 70th Jubilee? Find a bust of Queen Elizabeth, which also serves as a planter, at Herma’s + a small statue with solar powered waving hand. Yes, we know, the latter is a bit kitsch, but we like to satisfy that guilty pleasure every now and then.

Entertaining with Spoons

Serving hors d’oeuvres, or amuse-bouche, from spoons provides the perfect amount of food for guests to enjoy prior to dinner. It also allows you to be creative, making a charming presentation that provides guests with a little something different.

We used the Village Grocer Flank Steak (sliced thin, medium rare), Bacon-wrapped Scallops (scallops placed on top of bacon), Tiger Shrimp, Rummo Pasta, Mamma Nuccia Pasta Sauce, English Cheese Biscuits, Herma’s Signature Papperdew Peppers, Le Fleurmier Charlevoix (soft, cow’s milk cheese) for our spoons pictured above.

Other foods to place on spoons?

Meatballs – Prosciutto with Scoop of Melon – Burrata with Cherry Tomato – Soup and Crouton – Olive and Cheese Cube – Raspberry with Chocolate – Mini Scoop of Ice Cream with Berry Sauceand so much more

Raclette la Savoie

This is an ancient mountain cheese from France that is famed for its melting capabilities. Janis says this Raclette is so special it may be enjoyed all on its own one slice at a time.

The French, however, love to pour this cheese, melted, over foods like small potatoes, prosciutto, pickled vegetables, cooked sausages, cauliflower, broccoli, thinly sliced zucchini, sliced mushrooms, sliced pears, apples and baguette. We love to melt it on top of hamburgers and to create delicious grilled cheese sandwiches with it.

Buffalo Mozzarella

Buffalo Mozzarella is creamier, softer and far more flavorful than that of cow’s milk cheese with a tanginess and depth of flavor that is all its own. This can be attributed to water buffalo milk’s high fat content — nearly double that of cow’s milk. It’s primarily produced in the hills around Naples where water buffalo are most plentiful.

How Buffalo Mozzarella may be used…

Buffalo Mozzarella on Baguette 

Top Manoucher Baguette slices with buffalo mozzarella and broil the slices in the oven. As the cheese begins to melt, remove and enjoy with your favourite Salt Spring Kitchen spread.

Buffalo Mozzarella with Greens

Slice mozzarella into cubes. – Coat with pesto and olive oil. – Marinate at least 30 minutes. –  Place cubes alongside slices of cucumber, bell pepper, endive, and on top of radicchio leaves. – Best served on the same day it is made.

Other uses…

Buffalo Mozzarella may also be enjoyed as a Caprese Salad (with tomato and fresh basil), on pizza, flat bread (with cucumbers, cherry tomatoes and pesto), also used in pasta, omelets and casseroles.

Delice de Bourgogne will be available in our coolers by Thursday. Also find Oro Rosso, an amazing dessert blue made with sweet wine and berries. Ask to have this one-of-a-kind cheese sliced just for you.

Coming soon! We expect Comte and Burrata to be available sometime next week.


Find Prosciutto, Fennel Salami, Mortadella along with Porchetta Ham sliced just the way you like. Our Porchetta Ham is a beautiful Italian ham that when sliced thin, folds daintily on a cheese board or placed in a sandwich. Of course, if you are in a hurry, there are all sorts of amazing meats already packaged and ready-to-go in our coolers.
