Herma’s News – Celebrating Summer with Food and Drink

Cooking is like painting or writing a song. Just as there are only so many notes or colors, there are only so many flavors – it’s how you combine them that sets you apart. – Wolfgang Puck

She has filled the gap in the local food market for high-quality mustard that people of all cooking levels can easily dabble with. – Smak Dab

For your next Summer Salad…

Refreshing dressings & vinaigrettes from Belberry are delicately whipped for a smooth and creamy texture perfect for your next summer salad.

We suggest their Lime & Dill Dressing, Green Cucumber Dressing, Honey & Ginger Dressing.

Barbecue alternatives…

Marinated Flat Chickens

Try barbecuing the Village Grocer’s Flat Chickens which are marinated in flavourful sauces like…Maple Mustard, Rosemary, Hyatt, Caesar, Jamaican Jerk and Lemon.

How to prepare?

Barbecue indirectly on high for about an hour or in an oven for 1 1/2 hours at 350 F. Juicy, flavourful and delicious – a wonderful way to share food with guests. Pair with seasonal fruit and a leafy green salad.

Smoked Pork Chops

How to prepare?

Grill smoked pork chops lovingly on the barbecue over medium heat. Turn frequently for approximately 5 to 10 minutes and brush with your favourite sauce. Herma personally loves Salt Spring Kitchen’s Fruit Spreads which contrast nicely with the smoked flavour.

And for Dessert…

S’mores – Getting Creative!

photos by Saltspring Kitchen Co.

Everybody is coming up with new ways to make s’mores into their own unique creation. Try dark chocolate instead of milk, or any of your other favourite types of chocolate for that matter. Fraktals for instance would be heavenly. Add one of your favourite fruity spreads from Salt Spring Kitchen too. The possibilities are endless.

Bacon and S’mores

Graham Cracker + Dark Chocolate + Marshmallow + Candied Bacon = amazing combination

Coat bacon strips with brown sugar and bake at 375 F for 15 to 25 minutes until bacon is crispy. Soak up grease with paper towel.

Try Gourmet du Village Skillet Kits for Dessert.

We suggest a S’mores Skillet Kit or Brownie Skillet Kit. Try adding Stonewall Kitchen’s Sea Salt Caramel Sauce to either of the skillets. Popham Lane’s Black Currant Sauce would also be delicious drizzled over your chocolate brownie.

Quiche for Overnight Guests

For a lovely brunch or breakfast to enjoy with overnight guests try the Village Grocer’s Quiche. Find Broccoli Quiche, Quiche Lorraine, Italian Quiche and Asparagus Quiche in Herma’s freezer section. Just thaw and place in oven for a yummy quiche with flaky crust. No fuss. No mess.

Replenish Summer Skin with Beekman 1802

photos by Beekman 1802

For weathered skin, cracked and dry from sun and gardening, we suggest Beekman’s moisturizing goat’s milk body creams and hand creams. Nothing beats goat’s milk for its ability to absorb into our skin creating healthy, replenished skin cells.
