Herma’s News – Herma’s Thanksgiving Message, Cheeses, Meat-to-Go
When you rise in the morning, give thanks for the light, for your life, for your strength. Give thanks for your food and for the joy of living. If you see no reason to give thanks, the fault lies in yourself. – Tecumseh
Herma’s Thanksgiving Message
This Thanksgiving I want to look beyond the preparation of a Thanksgiving feast. This Thanksgiving I would like to consider all the blessings that are so often overlooked – the joy of a sunny day, observing the beauty as one season dissolves into another and a sense of joy experienced when hearing the laughter of little children. I want to give thanks for always having the essentials of life – a bounty of food, a comfortable place to sleep and just the right amount of warmth to feel comfortable as I go about my day.
Joy can be found in the smallest, most basic parts of our lives and we are often so used to these blessings that we fail to acknowledge them anymore. This Thanksgiving let’s keep this presence of mindfulness with us not just on Thanksgiving day, but throughout the year. If we do then perhaps most of us would be filled with a sense of joy even on the most ordinary of days.
Have a joyous Thanksgiving and be sure to also appreciate those at your table. After all, love is the most precious blessing of all.
Love and thanks to all.
Open Thursday and Friday 9-6, Saturday and Sunday 9-5, Closed Monday
NEW from Herma’s this Thanksgiving…
Thanksgiving meal for 1-2 persons available beginning Friday, while quantities last.
This year we are pleased to offer single portions of turkey, stuffing, gravy and cranberry sauce, already prepared and ready to take home. It gives those that only want enough food for one or two the chance to enjoy the mouth-watering goodness of the Village Grocer’s exceptional foods.
Thanksgiving Cheese Platter Suggestions
We believe a beautifully arranged cheese and charcuterie platter is one of the best ways to serve guests on a special occasion. Below are a few suggestions that might be helpful when preparing a cheese platter.
Listed below are four cheeses we feel would be lovely placed together on a platter.
Firm #1 and this week’s Featured Cheese
Quicke’s Vintage Clothbound Cheddar is hand-made from a traditional recipe by Mary Quicke and her team at Home Farm which is located amongst the rolling, green hills of Devon.
The Quicke family, who has been at Home Farm since 1540, uses a herd of cows that have been specially bred to produce just the right balance of milk for their cheddar. They also use locally sourced Cornish Sea Salt during production in which the cheddar is carefully matured under cloth for about two years.
This beauty is firm and moist with an earthy aroma. We love its depth of flavour – from savory to buttery, to salted caramel.
A definite prize-winner on any cheese platter.
Firm Cheese #2
Ago Negro Curado is an aged sheep’s milk cheese from La Mancha, Spain that is imbued with lovely seams of black garlic. Delicate, fresh and complex, and rich too, thanks to the garlic!
Shropshire Blue from the UK is made in a similar way to stilton but slightly sharper and creamier. This mellow cheese has the striking contrast of orange due to the addition of annatto from a tropical fruit.
We not only love the taste of this cheese, but also appreciate how it will look on a black slate or wooden cheese board. Consider how colorful gourds and pumpkins will compliment the color of this cheese.
Herma’s Signature Marinated Goat Cheese Rounds are as delicious as they are pretty. We love a cheese platter that can be created in an artful manner that is pleasurable to behold. This cheese will certainly be a welcome addition when placed elevated in a martini glass or long stemmed crystal dish.
This delicious goat cheese is marinated in garlic, roasted red peppers, capers and herbs along with a splash of our favourite Italian Olive Oil.
Next place something sweet near the center of your platter. We are particularly partial to Garlic Box’s Cranberry Garlic Rum Preserve, especially at Thanksgiving. Dried apricot and slices of pear would also be nice.
All of our Italian meats are ready to be sliced any way you like and would certainly compliment the above selected cheeses. Try Porchetta, Prosciutto or Sopresetta and place in pretty accordion-style folds. We also have a lovely selection of salamis that are packaged and ready-to-purchase. After slicing, fan circles in pretty manner.
Don’t forget to add crackers, baguette and/or crostini to your platter!
Herma’s Signature Crostini
Herma’s Signature Crostini have been made-from-scratch especially for Thanksgiving weekend. So delicious with pates, cheeses and charcuterie. Get it while it lasts!
