Herma and Gordon have been busy creating a new look for the store as they display new merchandise. While we know the holidays may not be on your radar just yet, they do tend to creep up on us. It is sometimes better to plan ahead, especially where gift baskets are concerned.

Whether you are arriving at an extravagent Thanksgiving Meal with something special for the hostess, showing appreciation for employees and clients at Christmas or just wanting to please someone special with a bounty of gourmet foods, a gift basket from Herma’s is more than just a joy to receive. Tips for Entertaining with Cheese

Choosing the Cheese

Choose cheeses based on their contrasting textures (hard versus soft) and contrasting flavours (mild versus pungent). You may even want to create diversity by choosing cheeses according to the type of milk each cheese contains whether cow, sheep, goat or buffalo.

How Many and How Much

Generally three cheeses are a good number to offer plus maybe two more depending on the size of your party. When planning how much cheese you need it is best to stick with the rule of offering 1 1/2 ounces of each cheese per guest.

If in doubt, visit when Margaret is in the Cheese Shop between Thursday and Sunday. She will be happy to offer advice as to what cheeses to choose and how much of each cheese you may need for your party or get-together.

Social Distancing

At this time when social distancing is a wise practice, you may want to divide cheeses up and place onto smaller platters. This will allow each small group of guests a chance to enjoy their cheese worry-free.

Find nicely priced platters at Herma’s that are small enough to serve guests near where they are seated rather than having them graze from one large platter.

Types of Cheese Knives

In our Cheese Shop we not only carry a wonderful selection of cheese, we also carry the tools to go with the cheese. This includes spreaders, knives and graters.

Below is information that will help you master the names of just a few cheese knives and how they may be used.

Cheese Spreader (round dull knife)

A dull edged, round blade is a cheese spreader, also known as a spatula knife. It is made for applying creamy, spreadable cheeses onto breads and crackers.

It is the perfect knife to use with our Signature Products which are great as an addition to any cheese platter. You may want to own a handful of spreaders as they are so useful while entertaining.

Parmesan Knife (triangular and stubby with sharp pointed tip)

A parmesan cheese knife is a triangular stubby, sharp-edged blade with sharp-pointed tip. Its pointed tip is made for breaking off chunks of hard, dry cheeses like Parmesan and Pecorino. Its sharp edge’s function is to cut into the rind of a cheese.

Flat Cheese Knife (wide and paddle-shaped with blade at the end)

This is a flat, wide, paddle-like cheese knife with its blade at the end. It is used to cut slices off of aged cheeses by holding the blade vertically over the cheese and pushing downward. Use on semi-soft to semi-hard cheeses like Gruyere and Asiago.

Narrow Plane Knife (rectangular with blade at the end)

A narrow plane cheese knife, known as a trapezium knife, also has its blade at the end of the knife. It is made for cutting cheese with the blade placed vertically over the cheese as well as for chipping away at a block. It is narrower and more rectangular than the flat cheese knife and features two sharp sides as opposed to just one. Use on semi-soft to hard cheeses like Gouda and Cheddar.

Cheese Plane (with sharp-edged slit)

A cheese plane is a spatula-like paddle with sharp-edged slit in the middle. It is used for achieving thinly sliced pieces of cheese. To slice the cheese, pass the plane along the top or side of the cheeses. Use on semi-soft to semi-hard cheeses like havarti or gouda.

Slim Blade Cheese Knife (very narrow blade)

A slim blade knife has a very narrow blade with sharp edge. It has very little surface area to prevent soft cheeses from sticking to the blade. Use on soft to semi-hard cheeses like Camembert.

Featured Cheese

Taleggio

Taleggio is a soft, raw cow’s milk cheese with a thin rind and a soft consistency. This  P.D.O. cheese has a strong smell, but its taste is relatively mild with an unusual fruity tang.

Documentation of this cheese dates back to the year 1200 in which it has been described in the trade and exchange of products. It is named after Val Taleggio which is located on the northern border of Italy in the province of Bergamo.

It pairs beautifully with walnuts, hazelnuts, almonds, radishes, pumpkin, zucchini, potatoes and mushrooms. This easy-going cheese, which gets along with others so well, will allow you to create risottos, quiche and savoury pies. Also great used in omelettes and placed in a sandwich with prosciutto. As far as wine is concerned, we suggest that Taleggio be paired with something red, young and fruity.

While we are open to customers for in-store shopping we wanted to remind you that we still offer curbside pickup to those who desire it.

Call 905-885-9250 daily between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m.

  • Have your order request ready along with credit card payment info when you call.
  • Call a second time when you have arrived in our parking lot.
  • The drop-off may be as simple as popping your trunk to have goods placed inside.
