Herma’s Cheese Shop
We have a broad selection of cheeses from around the world – France, Spain, Italy, Ireland, England, Canada and the US. This week we have acquired some really fabulous Goudas from Holland, each carrying with them their own strikingly, individualistic styles.
Gouda accounts for over half of Holland’s cheese production and can vary widely depending on age.
Younger Gouda cheeses are mild and almost sweet in flavor with soft, smooth texture. Whether placed on a sandwich or cubed and eaten on their own, the younger Goudas will make your young person smile as they get to enjoy this perfect back-to-school snack. Of course, adults love it too!
Herma, being Dutch, often offers overnight guests thin slivers of mild Gouda on slices of bread in the morning. And she always has it on hand as she knows it is her grandchildren’s favorite.
The older the Gouda gets, the harder, stronger and darker it becomes. It will also carry with it the more complex flavour of butter and nuts. While great on its own, it is also fabulous melted on a hamburger, as part of mac n’ cheese, placed on a salad or paired with apples and pears.
How to pronounce…
While we in North America pronounce Gouda, g-oo-dah, in Holland the g is slightly guttural and is pronounced, (g)h-ow-da.
Storing your Gouda
Don’t suffocate your Gouda in plastic. To let it breath, wrap it in Herma’s special cheese paper, or parchment paper with a loose outer layer of plastic wrap. You will also want to store your Gouda in the warmest part of the fridge, like in the vegetable drawer.
Black Lemon Cheese
Absolutely striking on a cheese board, this black Gouda will give you the refreshing taste of lemon. The anise gives it its color as well as a slight licorice after-taste. It is also healthy as it is enriched with vitamin D3. Enjoy this lovely cheese with a glass of light, crisp wine.
Other Goudas at Herma’s…
Mocha Gor Gouda (coffee flavored) – Spiced Gouda – Aged Mature Gouda – & more
While in Herma’s Cheese Shop, have us slice exquisite Italian meat – Fennel Salami, Porchetta Roast Pork and Prosciutto – to your liking. It’s healthy with no nitrates, so eat up.
Tasty salamis and pepperettes are also available to just pick up and go.
We hope you have a fabulous weekend as you enjoy what’s left of the glory days of summer.
